This week in Paris: Cézanne, Eva Gonzalès and the Gardens Festival

Two major exhibitions have just opened a short walk from the hotel, and the weekend is all about gardens. Our ideas until Sunday 27 September.
On the programme
Eva Gonzalès (1847–1883)
The first major retrospective of Manet's only pupil: nearly 100 works, shown with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The Petit Palais is in the 8th, about 20 minutes' walk from the hotel (estimate).

La Fête à Neu-Neu funfair
Paris's big back-to-school funfair sets up in the Bois de Boulogne: rides, children's attractions, games of skill and free parades at weekends.

- Free entry, rides are paid. Mon, Tue, Thu 4 pm – midnight; Wed 2 pm – midnight; Fri 2 pm – 1 am; Sat noon – 1 am; Sun noon – midnight.
Cézanne and Us
Nearly 180 works, around 70 of them by Cézanne, set against the artists who, right up to today, reinvented painting through him. About 20 minutes' walk from the hotel (estimate), late opening on Fridays until 10 pm.

Chatou Antiques Fair (111th edition)
More than 300 antique and second-hand dealers set up on the Île des Impressionnistes: antique furniture, jewellery, paintings, vintage fashion and curiosities. A riverside escape, by RER A from Auber.

Paris Gardens Festival
A whole weekend of gardening workshops, tours and meetings with gardeners, tree surgeons and beekeepers. Over 150 venues take part, including Parc Monceau in the 8th; the main village is at Parc de Choisy (13th).

- Free. Saturday and Sunday, 2 pm – 7 pm.
The 8th arrondissement has plenty for your free evenings: Cézanne and Us has just opened at the Grand Palais and, right across the street, the Petit Palais holds the first major retrospective of Eva Gonzalès. Two visits that fit easily between meetings.
On 26 and 27 September, Paris celebrates its gardens: over 150 venues offer free workshops and tours, including Parc Monceau, a quarter of an hour's walk from the hotel.
