Loved the Frick Collection in New York?
In New York, Henry Clay Frick began building his Fifth Avenue house in 1913 to live among his paintings, intending from the start to leave it to the public; it opened as a museum in 1935. Paris has its own version, and an older one: the Hôtel André, built by the architect Henri Parent between 1869 and 1876 for the banker Édouard André. With his wife, the painter Nélie Jacquemart, he gathered a collection of Italian, French and Flemish paintings there. When she died in 1912, Nélie Jacquemart-André left the house and its collections to the Institut de France, and the museum opened in 1913.
The idea is the same as at the Frick: you visit a real collectors' home, reception rooms and grand staircase included, not a neutral gallery. This season the mansion is also celebrating 150 years since its inauguration.
What is in the “Timeless Tintoretto” exhibition?
According to the museum, the exhibition traces the exceptional career of Jacopo Robusti, known as Tintoretto, and his lasting influence. It brings together some forty paintings and graphic works from public and private collections in France, Italy and elsewhere.
